Pupils dig in to welcome Spring

Ashton Gate Primary SchoolChildren at a primary school in central Bristol have sprung into action and planted more than 100 trees to mark the start of the season.

The pupils at Ashton Gate Primary School received the funding from local electricity company Western Power Distribution through its Tree Scheme initiative, which provides grants to schools and community groups to improve their natural surroundings.

The British native species trees included oak, cherry and wild pear along with shrubs such as holly and rowan. The larger trees were planted into holes excavated at the edge of  the concrete playground (with soil kindly supplied by neighbouring supermarket Aldi). Smaller whips and shrubs were planted around the filed boundary and also some into planters to be distributed around the school’s grounds so all pupils can see them.

Peter Fossclark (Deputy Head) of Ashton Gate Primary School said:’This green boost to our school grounds is a real bonus for the children as they have been able to get involved in the planting at the outset. This will hopefully encourage them to take responsibility for the trees and shrubs going forward and in addition it may enable them to see more wildlife and birds visiting our school grounds.’
